Provisional Atlas of the Macro Moths of Friesland (Thanks to Andy Saunders for translation) Moth Project Vlinderwerkgroep Friesland This website is an idea from the workgroup, to outline the recent trends of the Macro Moths in Friesland. After the publication of the book, The Butterflies of Friesland in 2000 (Vlinderwerkgroep Friesland and De Vlinderstichting 2000), the workgroup members have turned their attention to the Macro Moths. The last survey of Moths was published in the book by Lempke (De vlinders van Friesland) in 1985. One year later the workgroup was set up, and since then, many records have been accumulated. It was felt that it was time to issue these records to a wider public. Because there are so many species of Macro Moths, it was decided to present the atlas step for step. This means that the atlas will grow and develop over time. In 2004 it was decided to begin with the family Notodontidae (Prominents). Unfortunately not all the records are available. Many records are often written in notebooks, and this takes time to rework in the computer and in the atlas. We shall try to complete the records as soon as possible. We also hope that the atlas will inspire more people in Friesland to get interested in moths and to send their records in.
The Atlas The atlas will give a brief description of all the species seen here in Friesland. By every species attention shall be given for Biology, Phenology, Ecology and Status. The flight times of all the species will be given by diagrams. So it is easy to see when the moth is active. There shall also be a chart, to show where the moth has been seen past and present in Friesland. With the atlas, we aim to show the current situation of all the species, and what can be done for the future. The description for every moth is presently taken from foreign moth books, mainly English and German. In the future we hope to change this, using our own experience catching the moths here in Friesland.
In the under mentioned table is a review regarding the moth families, and where they can be found (page numbers). The list conforms to the Checklist of Dutch Lepidoptera (Kuchlein and de Vos 1999). Also the scientific names are taken from Kuchlein and de Vos 1999. The Dutch names are taken from Groenendijk 2001. The scientific and Dutch names of plants follow Van der Meijden 1996.
This electronic publication would not be possible without the help from many people. We would like to thank these people listed in the "Waarnemers" section of the main menu for all their moth records and help over the years. We hope we can rely on your help in the future.
